چکیده

any ocean surface signatures in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imagery are characterized by relatively low normalized radar cross section values. Distinguishing among these signatures objectively can be very difficult, especially with only the singleband and single-polarization SAR imagery available from the European Remote Sensing satellites and the Canadian Radarsat-1. Nevertheless, distinctive patterns, when interpreted in the context of the geographic region, season, and local weather conditions, can be extremely useful in properly identifying many of the observed low-backscatter features. Examples of such features presented here are interpreted based on the regional and temporal context of the SAR imagery as well as the morphology and temporal persistence of the features. (

Determining the mixing of oil and sea water using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar

[1] Knowledge of the characteristics of spilled oil in the ocean is important for cleanup operations, predictions of the impact on wildlife, and studies of the nature of the ocean surface and currents. Herein I discuss a method for evaluating the characteristics of oil in a marine environment using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and present a new, simple classification, called the oil/water mix...

Characterization of Synthetic Aperture Radar Image Features of the Ocean as a Function of Wind Speed and High Frequency Radar Products

The potential for better understanding of ocean conditions through remote sensing was recognized here with the focus on Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) and High Frequency (HF) radar. The hypothesis that combining remote sensing products may improve results was tested using SAR imagery and available HF radar-derived surface current maps along central California. One SAR image was selected for ass...

Feature Extraction in the North Sinai Desert Using Spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar: Potential Archaeological Applications

Techniques were implemented to extract anthropogenic features in the desert region of North Sinai using data from the firstand second-generation Phased Array type L-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (PALSAR-1 and 2). To obtain a synoptic view over the study area, a mosaic of average, multitemporal (De Grandi) filtered PALSAR-1 σ◦ backscatter of North Sinai was produced. Two subset regions were sele...

Fine Structure of the Upper Ocean from High-resolution Sar Imagery and In-situ Measurements

Satellite-based radar images of the ocean surface reveal fine features of natural and man-made phenomena in the upper ocean [1–3]. Satellite technology continues to advance as it produces better/higher resolution images of the ocean surface. Fine horizontal features on scales less than the typical scale of the upper ocean mixed layer (about 30–50 m) are often associated with three-dimensional p...

Measurement of wave crest length and groupiness from spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar

Most measurements of ocean surface wave variations are made in the temporal domain, i.e wave height or slope as a function of time. By contrast, a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is capable of measuring waves in the twodimensional spatial domain at essentially a single instant. As a consequence, SAR imagery affords us a unique opportunity to examine some of the non-linear features of ocean surfa...
